I am over here dying because I know you clicked on this post because of the title! Let me preface by saying that I didn’t make exercise porn although I am sure there is a niche for that out there! Haha! I’ll explain a little bit later what I mean by the title of my post but for now….on to my recent endeavor.
In the midst of living and working, I am deep in yet another health challenge. Back in December I decided to tackle Melissa Bender 30 Day Challenge and really enjoyed it. It’s pretty difficult to workout everyday, but this challenge was fairly easy. It was 15 minutes a day for 30 days and was really easy to stick to. If you’re interested you can go to her website and start it for yourself. This month I decided to start a body sculpt and cardio challenge. Because my focus has shifted from losing pounds to overall health and toning, I am really focused on toning up my body. I still do a great mix of cardio and sculpting, but I’ve also found the joy of using weights! You can find her newest challenge here and try it yourself.
Now I must confess….one of the things that I have wanted to do for awhile is record a workout video. Sounds crazy right? Actually it probably makes very little sense to you because it definitely sounds crazy to me. This morning Lady S was out to school and I had the house to myself so I went for it! I filmed a workout! It was interesting to do because so often I am in the zone when I work out so I am not thinking about anything but I made a conscious effort to go a little harder and to narrate if you will. I am not sure if I want to make this a regular thing to share or just keep it for myself. I’ll film a few more and see.

Howdy readers! I can’t believe that it already the middle of January! This month is literally flying by. Before we know it, it will be Valentines…the holiday for lovers…and chocolate…and cake…and good food. Haha! Obviously I already have ideas in mind for Mister S! (hint hint).
One of the crazy things about January is that as teachers it’s a LONG months. As if being a teacher wasn’t hard enough, most of us go all month with no check until the very end. I’ll spare you the details, but it takes for some careful planning in terms of food and the such. At the beginning of the month, I sat down and came up with a menu plan for our family detailing our dinners. This helps me to know what to buy when I go grocery shopping and what meals we plan to have. We try very hard to alternate meals that we know are tried and true hits and meals that we want to try. We usually save the new recipes for the weekend since I have more time to come up with an alternate meal if it turns out to be a dud! For dinner, we typically alternate between ground beef, pork chops or tenderloin, boneless skinless chicken breasts, and wild caught fish of some sort. For breakfast, I have found the joy of making freezer sandwiches and recently tackled homemade cinnamon rolls! Let me tell you (like I have BEFORE), that menu planning is the key to food success. It is in those random moments when you’ve worked a long day and are dog tired that you make the worst eating choices.
Something I see often at work, in the grocery store, listening to friends, is that they think that losing weight means eating bland food or better yet eating things that people KNOW they won’t keep up with. Case in point…Everywhere I look there are these green concoctions that people are calling green smoothies. Honestly, to me, they look like baby poop that has been blended with some fruit and ta-da! Now you have a green smoothie. Don’t get me started about what it looks like once it starts to melt. Bleh…..Now before you get all upset know this. If you like green smoothies…go for it. The bigger question is….Is that something you can keep up and is it going to become a regular part of your healthy eating plan? If the answer is no, then don’t waste your time. It goes along the lines of those Lean Cuisine meals…bleh…bleh…bleh…They came in handy when you’re in a bind but they just don’t sustain you. I used to eat them years ago and literally after 2 hours, I was ready to eat something else because they just don’t have staying power.
If I could tell people one thing it would simply be …. Eat Well and Eat Good. Food is nourishment for your body and once you begin your journey, your attitude towards food will undoubtedly change. Yes chips taste delicious and I have some from time to time, BUT almonds taste good and so do apples with peanut butter. Clearly you can decide for yourself what is the healthier option for you. Also don’t be afraid to get in that kitchen and actually cook some of your favorites from scratch. I promise you it might be intimidating at first but you’ll be surprised at how different food tastes when it’s not packed with food dyes, preservatives, and crap you can’t pronounce.

Howdy readers and Happy New Year!! It’s hard to believe that 2013 is over. The older I get the more time seems to fly. I remember being a kid and thinking that time moved so slow but not anymore! All in all, last year was wonderful! The Mister and I added one more year to our wonderful relationship and Lady S is growing like a weed and thriving. 2013 saw us continuing forward with our health journey and we are carrying it over into the new year. That leads me to the idea of resolutions.
In essence it’s something that you commit to do or change. The New Year is always the time when most people decide to do something different. Some people make resolutions to stop smoking, to have healthier relationships, to pray more, to get a new job….and here is where the issue comes in. What in the world stopped someone from making a change BEFORE? What is it about a new year that changes people? Well, I guess it depends on who you ask. I have never been into making resolutions at the new year it any other time of year. If there is something pressing that needs to be done, then I’ll do it when I get ready. I have made resolutions in the past regarding my health and they never stuck. I would do great for a few weeks and then it would wane.
All over the tv now is Jessica Simpson and her weight watchers ads…or Jessica Hudson or Valerie Bertinelli! I want to throw random objects at the tv every time I see it. It irritates me to no end because it puts these false ideas into people’s heads. Losing weight is simply a PART of your health journey. The goal should not be to lose weight but to live a healthier lifestyle and the weight loss will come. I won’t get preachy in this post but I wish everyone well who makes a health resolution. Remember the hardest part is the beginning.
